R+P Post 3: Our Production and Distribution

We have decided to use 20th Century Fox as our distributor and RC Productions as our production company.

We decided to do this as films similar to ours such as John Tucker Must Die were distributed by them as well as many other rom-com films. 20th Century Fox is also a mainstream, global, well-known distributor who have distributed many big Hollywood blockbusters which is exactly what our film needs as we want it to be one of those big blockbusters.

John Tucker Must Die is about a basketball star (John Tucker) who has played girls and manipulated them into believing he's the one all whilst cheating on each one. The girls that have been affected by him then form a group and think of hilarious plans to get their revenge on him. The film makes light of quite a serious situation and makes it very comedic which is similar to what we wish to do. Hence, we chose the same distributor as this film.

R+P Post 2: Our Target Audience

Collectively as a group, we have decided that the core target audience for our opening sequence will be rom-com fans. Rom-com is a genre with a large and loyal fan base who are likely to spend their money and see similar films. We also want it to appeal equally to the male and female audiences which is challenging stereotype as rom-com's are typically made to appeal to mainly women. We intend to do this by making the main character of our film a male. This way, our male audience can relate to our main character and this would encourage them to come and see the movie.

For example, 22 Jump Street is a great example where the two lead characters are male but the film demonstrates that males have feelings too and that they are capable of feeling raw emotions like love and brotherhood. The film also entwines comedy in there to attract a variety of audiences but also appeal equally to men and women. This is what we wish to achieve in our film as well.

She's the man is also a great example as the lead characters are a mix of males and females and they represent and target both genders equally.

Our opening sequence will also be skewed to teenagers and young adults aged between 15-25 as our research shows that they enjoy a good comedy film. Our film is also set in a Uni campus so it will also be relatable to them in terms of Uni life and they will understand why our main character is socially awkward and hopefully empathise with him. They will also understand the concept of talking to a girl online and then meeting her face to face for the first time. They can therefore relate to the anxiety that our main character feels during the opening of our film.

We based our decision to set our film in a University campus based on similar films like Pitch Perfect. Pitch Perfect is also set at a University campus and it gives an insight into what University life is like and it also showcases the various different social groups that are present in a college environment. The film is also very comedic, fun and lighthearted, similar to what we wish to achieve.

I believe that our ideas on how to portray our character will make quite an emotional scene about a first date lighthearted and comedic hence appealing to our core and secondary target audience.

R+P Post 1: How we intend to work as a group

I am working in a group with my fellow classmates Angela Chen and Mario Louka.

We intend to work together and efficiently as a team as we want to incorporate all of our ideas into our film opening to make the best possible finished product

In order to do this, we have set up group meetings outside of the lesson on Mondays and Fridays, each session lasting an hour. This will give us the extra time to quickly make decisions and get on with planning our opening sequence.

We have also set up a WhatsApp group chat where we all intend to talk consistently regarding our group decisions and other important matters.

We have also agreed on some very important rules which we must stick to if we want to make this project successful and enjoyable. These rules are:

  • Always turn up on time for group meetings, no excuses.
  • Listen to each others ideas and build off each other to cement our ideas.
  • Contribute equally.
  • Share all the work out equally and work to each other's strengths.
  • Be kind and respectful to one another.
